Success Story: Mary

Mary*, a woman in her mid-50's, suddenly found herself abandoned by her husband of more than 30 years.

She blamed herself for his infidelities, believing he was right when he said she was worthless, and that she was a horrible mother. Her self-doubt kept her up at night. Her insecurities made it difficult in performing her daily activities. Her guilt kept her from leading a normal life.

By now, Mary's children were grown and living their own lives. She had no one to turn to. She felt worthless and alone.

Mary came to Santa Anita Family Service to seek help. Thanks to our sliding-scale fee structure, Mary was able to receive our counseling services at a low cost. Through therapy, she learned how to cope with the difficulties she was facing in her life. Through her time in treatment, she overcame the emotional abuse she had endured for years, increased her confidence, and boosted her self-worth.  She began to feel more independent and confident. She was able to face the world again. Mary started putting her life back together. She learned financial management and other essential skills to keep her life on track. In addition, she began to build a network of support--something she has never had before.

Through her hard work in therapy, Mary was able to leave treatment with a sense of competence, self-worth and pride in herself. She developed viable coping mechanisms, increased her social network, and had an understanding of the depression that had taken hold of her.

Santa Anita Family Service would like to congratulate Mary on her accomplishments and we wish her the best in her new life.
